Microsoft ReFS (Resilient File System) for Windows Server 8 Revealed

Microsoft explained next generation file system ‘ ReFS ‘ for Windows 8 in a blog post . ReFS, which stands for Resilient File System , is built on the foundations of NTFS, so it maintains crucial compatibility while at the same time it has been architected and engineered for a new generation of storage technologies and scenarios.
In Windows 8, ReFS will be introduced only as part of Windows Server 8 . Of course at the application level, ReFS stored data will be accessible from clients just as NTFS data would be.
The key goals of ReFS are:
Maintain a high degree of compatibility with a subset of NTFS features that are widely adopted while deprecating others that provide limited value at the cost of system complexity and footprint.
Verify and auto-correct data. Data can get corrupted due to a number of reasons and therefore must be verified and, when possible, corrected automatically. Metadata must not be written in place to avoid the possibility of “torn writes”.
Optimize for extreme scale. Use scalable structures for everything. Don’t assume that disk-checking algorithms, in particular, can scale to the size of the entire file system.
Never take the file system offline. Assume that in the event of corruptions, it is advantageous to isolate the fault while allowing access to the rest of the volume. This is done while salvaging the maximum amount of data possible, all done live.
Provide a full end-to-end resiliency architecture when used in conjunction with the Storage Spaces feature, which was co-designed and built in conjunction with ReFS.
The key features of ReFS are as follows (note that some of these features are provided in conjunction with Storage Spaces).
Metadata integrity with checksums
Integrity streams providing optional user data integrity
Allocate on write transactional model for robust disk updates (also known as copy on write)
Large volume, file and directory sizes
Storage pooling and virtualization makes file system creation and management easy
Data striping for performance (bandwidth can be managed) and redundancy for fault tolerance
Disk scrubbing for protection against latent disk errors
Resiliency to corruptions with “salvage” for maximum volume availability in all cases
Shared storage pools across machines for additional failure tolerance and load balancing
ReFS inherits the features and semantics from NTFS including BitLocker encryption, access-control lists for security, USN journal, change notifications, symbolic links, junction points, mount points, reparse points, volume snapshots, file IDs, and oplocks.
And of course, data stored on ReFS is accessible through the same file access APIs on clients that are used on any operating system that can access today’s NTFS volumes.

TRAI Demands Telcos to Publish Tariff Plans in Newspaper

The Telecom Regulation Authority of India ( TRAI ) issued a Direction to all Telecom access service providers on ‘ Publication of Tariff Plans ’ in whichTRAI demands the telecom operators to publish their tariff plans in the newspapers in a move that is likely to reduce some problems faced subscribers and also ensure transparency.
The regulatory body has of late come up with various consumer-friendly guidelines. It recently asked the telecom operators to provide call, SMS and data usage details to the pre-paid customers. The body also criticised the operators for levying extra charges during festival days .
The regulator said that the tariffs must be published in at least one regional and one English newspaper . It also directed the operatorsto publish the tariffs every six months . The TRAI has further asked the operators to publish tariffs in a specific format, which differentiates between pre-paid and post-paid plans, and helps easy comparison.
The salient features of this Direction are:
1. All the tariff plans meant for pre-paid and post-paid subscribers shall be published in separate formats. These formats shall contain all the tariff plans offered by the Telecom access service provider in a service area covering all tariff items along with tariff for the same in tabular formats at one place for facilitating easy comparison across tariff plans.
2. All the tariff plans shall be made available to the subscribers in the prescribed formats at the Customer Care Centres, points of sale/retail outlets as well as on the website of the Telecom access service provider.
3. The Telecom access service provider shall ensure that the tariff plans published in the prescribed formats are updated on their website and customer care centre every time there is a change in any of the tariff plans, and make available the updated tariff plans in these formats bythe 7th day of January, April, July and October at their points of sale and retail outlets;
4. The Telecom access service provider have been mandated to publish all the tariff plans in prescribed formats in at least one regional language and one English newspaper at an interval not more than six month and provide compliance to the TRAI.
