Facebook's market maker losses may top$115 million: Sources
Four of Wall Street's major market makers involved in Facebook's botched initial publicoffering last Friday expect their losses from technical glitches onNasdaq's exchange to be around$115 million.
A software error on Nasdaq OMX Group Inc'sUS exchange delayed the social networking company's market debut by 30 minutes lastFriday. Many client orders were delayed, leading to significant losses to some investors and traders as the stock price dropped.
The exchange operator is facing lawsuits from investors and threats of legal action from brokers.
Claims from market makers look to overwhelm the $13 million fund the exchange aims to set up to deal with potential claims. Nasdaq's liability is limitedto $3 million in certain cases, but electronic trader Knight Capital Group, for one, has said it will fight to be fully compensated.
According to sources with knowledge of the situation:
* UBS AG had trading losses of around $30 million stemming from Facebook's IPO;
* Knight Capital Group saw losses of between $30 and $35 million;
* Citadel Securities booked losses of $30 million; and
* Citigroup Inc's Automated Trading Desk notched losses of about $20 million, according to a source.
A market maker is a firm that stands ready to buy and sell a particular stock on a regular and continuous basis at a publicly quoted price.
Other firms are expected to report additional losses from Facebook's IPO, including a $1 million loss by E*Trade Financial, potentially adding millions of dollars in cumulative claims, sources said.
Regulators, including the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin are now looking into how the IPO was handled. The US Senate Banking Committee is also reviewing the matter.

Facebook plans to create new search engine
Social networking giant Facebook is reportedly planning to create a new search engine which would help people to navigate on the website better.A ' Bloomberg-Businessweek ' report said the firm has deployed two-dozen Facebook engineers onto the ambitious project, which aims to improve the search engine currently available on the social network.
According to the report, the project is led by former Google engineer Lars Rasmussen.
The magazine's unnamed sources said that the project is "to help users better sift through the volume of content that members create on the site, such as status updates, and the articles, videos, and other information across the Web that people"like" using Facebook's omnipresent thumbs-up button".
According to The Telegraph, Facebook has done very little to improve its search engine, which currently lets people find other users, brands, status updates and some wider web results, through a long-standing partnership with Microsoft's search engine, Bing.
It has yet to properly focus its attention on the small search engine box situated at the top of each users' page.
Meanwhile, Facebook has declined to comment on the matter.

Facebook usage makes you sad -it reveals by a study

If you want to be happy in life, deleteyour Facebook account right now andcheer yourself up reveals a study .
According to the study by Utah Valley University , the more the people use the hugely popular social networking website Facebook, the more they will believe that others are much happier .
The study found that the carefully-chosen pictures of smiling, cheerful faces which Facebook users tend to plaster over their pages cumulatively convey a debilitating message to others.
While logging into Facebook account many times a day in office or at home may have turned an irresistible habit for a lot of people, particularly the young.
Sociologists Hui-Tzu Grace Chou and Nicholas Edge interviewed 425 undergraduate students about their happiness and that of their friends. Participants were asked how much they agreed or disagreed with statements such as ‘Life is fair’ and ‘Many of my friends have a better life than me’.
They then described their Facebook activity including their number of ‘friends’ and the proportion whom they actually knew. Ninety-fivepercent used Facebook, and on average they had been there for two and a half years and spent nearly five hours a week on it.
After allowing for gender, religiosity and whether people were single or attached, the study found that ‘the more hours people spent on Facebook, the stronger was their agreement that others were happier’. This was particularly true of Facebook users who stockpiled ‘friends’ they did not actually know.
Those who had used Facebook for longer were also ‘significantly’ likely to agree with the statement that ‘life is unfair’.
Ms Chou argues that this Facebook-related dissatisfaction is the result of a common psychological process known as ‘ correspondence bias ‘, in which we draw false conclusions about people based on limited knowledge.
According to Ms Chou, ‘looking at happy pictures of others on Facebook gives people an impression that others are “always” happy and having good lives’.
While Facebook users will know that their real friends have ups and downs in their lives, all they have to go on with their fake Facebook ‘friends’ is a smiling picture.
When that distorting effect is multiplied by the hundreds of Facebook friends that people don’t actually know, it is easy to see how bitterness can fester, said the study.

How to send profile pictures in Facebook Chat :
1. Go to any profile page that you want to use as an emoticon in your Facebook chat.

Forinstance, if you will go to my profile, the URL appear will be: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=109042787027351. However insome cases, you will find the name instead of an ID number such as http://www.facebook.com/xyz

Facebook Timeline Goes Live for All Users

Facebook Timeline - transforming the user profile into a virtual scrapbook that shows everything you done on facebook in a timely manner, is now available to all users. Beta version of Timeline was first launched for developers on late September.
Instead of merely listing your interests and personal info, the Timeline shows a detailed overview of your life on Facebook, with the ability to check out what you’ve been out to at a particular point in time.
Timeline comes with a new tool called the Activity Log, which enables you to finely tune what appears on your Timeline; you can “promote” a post to featured status, you can hide it from the Timeline or delete it altogether.
Timeline will also be available on Android devices as well as the mobile version of Facebook – m.facebook.com.
Like all major Facebook redesigns, Timeline was greeted with a fair share of criticism. Some users were concerned about Facebook’s request that users add even more personal info, as well as the fact that Timeline makes this info easily accessible, which could lead to identity theft.
Facebook is implementing a seven day grace period, where you can review anything that appears on the timeline and decide whether you want anyone to see it. However, once you upgrade to Timeline, that new profile will “go live” at the end of the seven-day review period.
