you can know your friends's mobile balance with your OWN mobile only, without any cost !! just see below :)
For Docomo :) --> Dial 09045012345 and select language & follow simple instructions.
For Airtel :) --> Actually this one is not working in all states, but still try it :)
Step 1) Dial 12140, Select your language &Press 2.
Step 2) Now enter your friend's mobile number without "0" or "+91"
Step 3) Then confirm it by pressing 1 & then when it asks for pin enter 1234
Step 4) Now press 3
If you will do all the steps correctly then you will get to know the balance
